How to Apply for a Passport in India: A Step-by-Step Guide

Applying for a passport in India has been made simpler with the online application system by the Ministry of External Affairs. If you’ve ever wondered “How to apply for a passport in India?”, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process.

 

1. Register on Passport Seva Portal:

Start by registering on the Passport Seva Online Portal (www.passportindia.gov.in). After registration, log in to the Passport Seva Online Portal with your registered login ID.

2. Fill the Application Form:

Click on “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport” link. Fill in the required details in the form and submit.

3. Pay and Schedule an Appointment:

Click the “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link on the “View Saved/Submitted Applications” screen to schedule an appointment. Online payment has been made mandatory for booking appointments at all Passport Seva Kendras/Passport Offices.

4. Visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/Regional Passport Office (RPO):

Visit the PSK/RPO where your appointment has been booked, carrying your original documents.

5. Police Verification:

After your visit to the PSK/RPO, police verification will be conducted. In some cases, pre-police verification might be required.

6. Passport Issuance:

Once the police verification is successfully completed, your passport will be printed and sent to your address.
