Singer Coco Lee Dies by Suicide at Age 48

Coco Lee, a highly successful singer and songwriter born in Hong Kong, has tragically died by suicide at the age of 48, according to a statement released by her siblings. Lee had been battling depression for several years, and her condition had worsened significantly in recent months.

Despite seeking professional help and fighting against depression, Lee’s struggles became overwhelming, and she tragically took her own life, her sisters stated. Over the weekend, she attempted suicide at home and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, she remained in a coma and passed away on Wednesday.

Born as Ferren Lee in Hong Kong, Coco Lee later moved to the United States, where she attended school in San Francisco. She began her singing career after winning second place in a singing competition held by broadcaster TVB in Hong Kong. At the age of 19, she released her debut album in 1994.

Throughout her nearly 30-year career, Lee ventured beyond Mandopop and released albums in Cantonese and English. Known for her powerful voice and captivating live performances, she worked tirelessly to open doors for Chinese singers in the international music scene.

Coco Lee made history as the first Chinese singer to break into the American market, with her English song “Do You Want My Love” charting at #4 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Breakouts chart in December 1999. She also lent her voice to the character Fa Mulan in the Mandarin version of Disney’s “Mulan” and recorded the Mandarin version of the movie’s theme song, “Reflection.”

In 2011, Lee married Bruce Rockowitz, a Canadian businessman and former CEO of Hong Kong supply chain company Li & Fung. While she had two stepdaughters from her marriage, she did not have children of her own.

In her last Instagram post from December 2022, Coco Lee shared pictures of herself and reflected on the challenging year she had faced. She expressed the importance of love and faith in her life, describing herself as a “female warrior” who faced difficulties fearlessly.

The news of Coco Lee’s tragic passing has deeply saddened the music industry and her fans. Mandopop singer-songwriter Wang Leehom paid tribute to her as the “biggest star” whom everyone wanted to collaborate with. Lee’s pioneering contributions to breaking international barriers in the music industry were celebrated and will be remembered as an important musical legacy.

Jolin Tsai, a Taiwanese singer, also expressed her condolences and remembered Coco Lee’s bright smile, which will always be cherished.

The loss of Coco Lee is a devastating reminder of the importance of mental health and the need for continued support and understanding for those struggling with depression. Her talent and contributions to the music industry will be remembered, while her untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against mental health issues.
