Neeyat: A Riveting Murder-Mystery with Intrigue and Quirky Detective

After a hiatus from the big screen, acclaimed actor Vidya Balan is gearing up for her highly-anticipated comeback with the upcoming murder-mystery film Neeyat, reuniting with her Shakuntala Devi director, Anu Menon. Since her last theatrical release in 2019 with Mission Mangal, Vidya has showcased her acting prowess in streaming hits like Shakuntala Devi, Sherni, and Jalsa.

In Neeyat, Vidya Balan portrays the role of Mira Rao, a brilliant detective assigned to investigate a murder that takes place during a lavish billionaire’s party in the scenic Scottish countryside. The primary suspect is Ashish Kapoor, played by Ram Kapoor, and as Mira delves deeper into the case, she discovers that each attendee harbors their own secrets and motives. Rahul Bose, Shahana Goswami, Prajakta Koli, Neeraj Kabi, Shashank Arora, and others portray the intriguing suspects. The film’s trailer hints at a storyline reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s renowned mystery novel “And Then There Were None,” albeit with the addition of a central detective character.

Mira Rao brings her astute investigative skills to the table, interrogating the suspects and unearthing their resentments and potential reasons to harm Ashish Kapoor. While the murder mystery genre has witnessed a resurgence globally with hits like “Murder Mystery,” Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot adaptations, and “Knives Out,” India’s recent offerings have been relatively scarce. The last notable murder mystery was the 2020 Netflix release “Raat Akeli Hai,” featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. With Neeyat, Bollywood ventures into the unexplored territory of locked room mysteries, and if successful, the film has the potential to kickstart a franchise for Vidya Balan.

Expressing her excitement about the project, Vidya Balan stated, “In Neeyat, Mira Rao is not your typical, everyday detective, which made it all the more enjoyable for me. Not only did I get to sink my teeth into an unusual and quirky character, but I also had the opportunity to work alongside a talented ensemble cast.”

Neeyat boasts a compelling screenplay penned by Anu Menon, Priya Venkataraman, Advaita Kala, and Girvani Dhyani, with dialogues crafted by Kausar Munir. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 7, followed by its availability on the Prime Video streaming platform, ensuring wider access to audiences eager to immerse themselves in this gripping murder mystery.
